I wouldn't advise using a railroad train as a hammer.

Tai, Can I drop my 5 1/2 pound straight peen on your anvil to?

deloid, What your saying makes sense about the larger anvils if a fellow was to work on one all day and everyday. I may get a couple hours forging in most days when its been cold like it is now. 3 hours in one stretch isn't done by me often anymore. I never really have worked on any anvil much over 200 pounds.

First one to cleave an anvil down the middle with a hammer gets a brownie point!

deloid,
I agree. It only comes by a couple of times a day!

..and I think that cleaving an entire anvil deserves slightly more than a brownie point.

Seriously now,

Tai,
Can you predict a weight for the final hammer design?

The computer predicted four pounds, but I haven't weighed the prototype. It feels close.

Hey! I'm thinking an anvil demolishing competition might be a cool idea! See who can knock the biggest chunk out of, horn off,... or split it in two down the middle with a hammer!

The winner gets a free "Hot Forging Basics" DVD.

So far,... I'm the champ for knocking the horn off a 50 pounder.

Would using an ASO made in China be fair?

ASO= Anivil shaped object. Usually referring to cheap cast anvils on e-bay.

Oh O.K. Yeah, we'll use a cheap cast iron anvil. A 50 pounder should do it... and I have just the hammer.

Should we put a size limit on the hammers for the ADC?

Tai,

I will take one.

This talk of anvil splitting has me interested. I have a POS anvil I got off ebay a few years back, and a 6lb maul......now I have a big question mark in my mind...

Nahhh, sounds like a trip to the ER.

I tried a prototype of this hammer that mntmanjs had on my first forging project and man does it move steel. I'd like to get one, but I need to find a decent anvil first.
