And now..for Something Completely Different

Ok..This is something I just whipped out yesterday trying to get my "head" straightened out afetr all the uproar and other "stuff" that has been going on around here...

I have no idea what in the heck I was thinking when I made this, and this is the result of my demented mind...

The blade is forged from an old leaf spring I have been tripping over for the last, ohhh some 20 odd years.... it's just about 25" long, hammered out and shaped like a cross between a Kapilan I have in my collection and a Chinese Dao/broadsword thingy...Looks alot like a jungle knife.machete for some reason... The two "fullers" I ground in with my angle grinder using the edge of a 1/8" thick wheel...(that was fun doing that...talk about hot sparks...set my T shirt on fire...)...I then punched a hole on the tip so you can hang it up from a nail in your hooch when you aren't out chopping zombies...cause I can't figure out what to for a sheath yet....

The blade has a very heavy distal taper from 5/16" at the ricasso to just over 1/8" at the tip. More or less "flat ground"..I left it "as forged" and the edge is draw filed for ease in resharpening in the field in case you hit a hard headed Zombie (aka Undead Congress member)

The guard is on old mild steel japanses style tsuba I got a few years back that I just let sit in my forge for the entire time I was working on the blade and that's the finish it has..it's all rough, scaled and nassy...It works with the overall theme...

The grip panels are some osage orange I have laying around seasoning that I got last year from a friend that has it growing in his back yard that I rough shaped with a wood rasp and wrapped with wet rawhide, then "pre-blood stained" with KMnO4 and varnished over that....to seal in everything.. I will say that the wet rawhide was a real "experience" to work with..talk about a slimey thing but it dried up nice and tight...I dunno why I did that..just seemed like a good idea at the time...I will be doing that again in the future when I need the effect...

It moves real nice in the hand...could effectively remove a limb or extremity quite nicely when civilization falls......OAL: 36" or so....Will be posted on my website shortly

So I think the whole thing..as rustic as it is, just "works"...It's something different from what I usually make..and most of all..I actually had FUN doing it...Cleared up my head too...

JPH (Brother Tai: I guess I am going a bit neo-tribal now, huh??...)

That's about the coolest thing I've seen around here in a long time! I love the lines--and the business end looks like the nose of a freight train.

Yer durn right, it works! Freakin' sweet!

It's not a shiny finish or costly materials that makes the aesthetics of a blade to me it is the flow of the lines. This one has got it!

I like the hole at the tip. It hangs up with the handle handy.
A good-looking chopper.

I'm going down today to get a ####### for my goldfish, "Eric".

A fantastic piece from the forge of Atar!

I will say that the wet rawhide was a real "experience" to work with..talk about a slimey thing
A hint: Let the rawhide dry a bit before working - if it's slimey it's really too wet - it will work, but is better and easier to work when drier, but still damp through. If part of it dries out too much while working it you can re-wet it by wrapping a damp rag around it and then some Saran wrap - let it set for fiftenn minutes to a half-hour or so.....

I can't figure out what to for a sheath yet....
Jim - If you're not in a huge hurry let's talk - I'd love to match a sheath up for you.......rawhide covered would be one way if not the way to go.........here's a rawhide covered one I did for a Tai piece - it was inspired by some SE Asian head hunter pieces........

Whoa there Dr. Jim! This is really a nice piece. I always get inspired when you post one of your pieces, and this one is no exception.
