50:1 ratio thingy

It is all more or less a moot point if your anvil is on a stand that is light weight wood, or is made of angle iron that has any spring to it, and if it isn't fastened down "tightly". An anvil that moves around on the stand, rocks a bit, or the stand rocks on the floor, or God forbid, all the above problems wastes a lot of your energy. And believe me small hammers moving quickly ding an anvil just as well as a big slow one. Forgive me I've done both, and you will to eventually. Heavier is better for all parts, except if you like to take your setup to hammerins. Then it's a pain, but still better once you get there. Use what you got, and don't hold off if you think ya need something bigger. Forge away, as experience can make up for a lot of lack in "proper" tools. That being said for newwer folks at forging, I'd look for something on the range of 120-175lb. for blade making. With a 4" wide face. That will do fine for a fair amount of stout forging especially if you have it on a strong stand that doesn't rock, and is well fastened down. If you're wantin to gang forge "big" stuff and do architectural ironwork then a bigger anvil would be better. Nobody but a railroad yard shop or a full time architec. iron shop "need" a 300-500 lb anvil. Just my thoughts.

Rob,
that hammer was'nt a prototype but one that Tai and I made quite a while ago.
Its simular but I think its probably 2 pounds. You will see the hammer at Tais and see the difference.

Here's the first finished mill job from the first run. Of course, they will look a little different after HT and tumbling.

Pics from Nathan the Machinist.

I have had a chance to use a couple of these. Used one at Tai's HammerJammin and brought one home. Just forged with it today. This hammer really moves steel. I was surprised how fast the material moved. Evan had a bit of a cold shut on the first blade I forged. It will take a little getting used to but I think I have the hang now. If anyone is fence sitting on this hammer I say go for it.

Thanks Tai.

Chuck
