The Wasteland Crow Project

Noah and I are at it again. We'll give you more details as we get further along, but here are a couple of pics to whet your appetite. Yes. That was a deliberate pun. 'Cause that's how I roll. On my dubs. With my homies.

First off, a blade that is about the same length as the golok from Wasteland Crow Phase 1, and Filipino in inspiration as well (a barong this time), but totally different in every other regard. The blade is forged from leaf spring, given multiple hardening cycles in vegetable oil, and then temper selectively drawn. The false edge is beveled but doesn't come to to a sharp edge. The handle is an integral socket, an incredibly strong construction. This thing wants to chop. Expect to see my new black shellac mixture sealing the cord wrap on this when it's done.

And a kwaiken forged from a file. This picture was taken prior to filing the cutting edge and heat treating it. Differentially hardened in veggie oil, integral lanyard scroll. There will be more done to the handle before I'm completely finished with it.

These are not from the same set. That's right, we're working on The Wastelad Crow Project Pases 2 and 3 at the same time. We're going about everything a little differently this time, so stay tuned. We'll update as we go. With better pictures.

Better pics tonight.

The barong has no sharp edge yet; you can whack it pretty hard on your palm and not do anything. Yet it will already chop better than your average hatchet that you can buy down at Home Despot. Yes, I'd bet money it cuts better than the Estwing's factory edge (Estwing being the best hatchet I've seen at Home Despot). That is elm that I chopped through, a fairly hard wood. I did have to work at it some, but nothing rediculous.

The handle is wrapped in cotton cord that has been sealed with black shellac, or rather clear shellac with a bottle of India ink mixed in. The cotton seems to soak the shellac in more than the hemp. It fits my hand very nicely. There will be more to the handle than what it's currently wearing.

And a nice shot of it against the gravel of the railroad bed next to my shop. The size of the gravel can be deceiving; the blade is 13.5 inches long.

A fellow on another forum requested that I take a shot of the barong "in hand" to give a sense of scale. That's my gorilla paw in the picture (I'm a lefty).

It also gives an idea of how much the blade drops, giving very nice chopping power.

Thanks, Tai!

My part on this set is done. The symbiote blade is made from the same piece of leaf spring and features a similar handle wrap of cotton cord and black shellac. I wanted it to compliment its companion's quasi-Filipino roots, so I based the general shape of the blade on that of balisongs and raised the clip above the level of the spine like the barong does.

The set together. The barong was originally going to have another type of wrap on top of the cotton cord base wrap, but I found that it was getting too thick. Sticking with a simpler theme, I finished it off with single leather lace Turk's head knots on the ends.

I don't know what Noah has in mind for these, but I'm sure it will be good.

Gotta wait on this one, though. It's Phase Three and I need to finish the blades for Phase Two.

It's very late in the Lone Star State, but I can't wait to give an update. (And that's what you get when a guy who majored in English is tired.)

I finally have done some work on Phase Two of the Wasteland Crow Project. And I only have one crappy picture at the moment.

Remember the kwaiken forged from a file in the first post of this thread? Without getting into a big description, it's now wearing bamboo, hemp, and amber shellac for the handle.

And I finished the forging and gave a rough initial profile grind of the big blade for which the kwaiken is a companion: a completely non-traditional quasi-wakizashi!

Behold its poorly-lit rough incompleteness!

The blade is currently just under 17 inches long, though I may end up taking some blade and making it part of the handle. I'll decide when I have more sleep under my eyelids.

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley, or so I've heard.

The barong and symbiote, after sitting in my shop for over a year, were purchased by a fellow who saw the pictures on the Wasteland Crow Project Blog. So I took them out of the display case, did some maintenance, made sure they were both shaving sharp, and shipped 'em off to Noah to do his magic.

Here's what they looked like right before getting packed away:

I eagerly anticipate seeing what Noah comes up with.

Noah has worked his magic with horse hide, and another Wasteland Crow Project has been delivered to a satisfied customer. They are destined to be put to work to slay some brush, which satisfies me.

A heavy-duty snap on the belt loop of the symbiote blade's sheath allows it to be securely fastened onto the main scabbard or detached and worn seperately on the owner's belt. In addition, the main scabbard can be worn on a belt or on a shoulder baldric. Carry options are nice!

I thought it was cool how this in-progress shot of the back of the main scabbard looked like a face on a totem or a Viking artifact.
