To be honest, I've been using plain old tempered glass. There are a couple of glass repair shops here in town, and I go there an buy their scraps. Everyone says that you can't cut tempered glass, but my Mom has worked in stained glass for many years, and showed me how to do it with about a 75% success rate. It also makes it nice that she owns a glass grinder so that I can shape transitions and edge like I want them. Right now I have about a dozen platen sized pieces stashed in the shop...should last me for a while!

many pieces that aren't quite perfectly flat. My supplier says it's a "float glass" and it's just part of the beast. |
