Temper line question

I have been making knives from various steel for about 20 years I like and mostly use 52100 . Generally without problem but the last one I made Has a beautiful temper line on the right side and NONE on the left side same steel same treatment as in the past. Could some of yall help out a little. I use a torch to harden quench then an oven to temper Ive done this for more than 10 tears without problem. Hobby maker no power hammer just like making knives

Using bar stock or flattened bearing race? Have found that some races have outer coating similar to chromium to reduce oxidation potential (rust).
