Anneal ? yes or no

I feel I've made enough knives from files and leaf spring to start getting serious but now confused by a Walter Sorrels video . He makes a stock removal bush craft with 440c without annealing ... and also says it's good for the beginner doing stock removal but after reading comments from other experienced knife makers they claim it is a very difficult metal to temper etc... mainly my Q is do I need to anneal the steel bars sent from supplier ? I have 6 ft of 440c 3/16 x 1 1/2 .

I don't know of any reason you need to anneal 440-C. I used it with stock removal in the late seventies and all through the eighties. I sent the blades to Paul Bos for HT and cryo treat. With cryo, it is a much better steel than it usually gets credit for. I never annealed it. Never knew any maker using it that did.

Dave, you are correct. Steel received from a supplier, especially stuff like 440C, will come in the annealed condition. Do your shaping and grinding and then harden/temper.

You've been used to files and springs, which do need to be annealed before they can be worked, because they're already hard.
