RJ Martin does a great job supplying this forum with heat-treating expertise and fielding complicated questions. The KnifeNetwork class does not replace this forum. It is a basic course for beginners and intermediate makers who want to learn HT from hands-on instruction, beginning to end.

I'm going to take the course too, and I expect it will give me a more solid understanding of the fundamentals that I only think I know.

Plus - they told me that if I'm taught to point my blade to Magnetic North during the quench, I'll get a full refund.

Don, do you anticipate a HT class eventually for carbon steels?

That's a good question, Robert.

I'd like to, but I don't have the proper equipment, such as a quench tank. I'm quite familiar with heat treating carbon steels, but I like to show pictures in the classes as I go to demonstrate the work. I don't believe a picture of me quenching a blade in a container of transmission oil or olive oil would be very impressive.

Now if somebody would donate a gas furnace with protective atmosphere and an automatic quench I'd be happy to include that. Or even better, a vacuum furnace with automatic quench like D'Holder uses.

That wouldn't help most knifemakers though. Most don't have that equipment either.

Seriously, I prefer to make all my blades from various "stainless" steels, and I have everything necessary for that.
