Hello:
The first "Barlow knife" was said to of been made circa 1670ish by one Obidiah Barlow working in Sheffield, england, however there is a bit of controversey that it was his grandson, one John Barlow that develouped the "Barlow knife" as it is know today about 60years later in 1745 as he was instramental in their exportation to the "New World" at that time period... A whole lot of US companies copied the design.. one to two blade..large bolster and a tear dropped shape grip was very popular..Geo. Washington was said to be very fond of his... There are numerous accounts of soldiers on both side of the US "Civil War" using them every day.... Also the American "folk tale" Author Mark Twain (Samuel Clemmens) mentioned them numerous times in is work, as did several others writers, both fiction and non fiction so they were most definately in the "old West".. Hope this helps.. JPH __________________ Dr Jim Hrisoulas, Author, Researcher, Swordsmith Living in the Nevada desert. N-T Hirsute Hine'y Hrisoulas |
