Question propane burner regulator

I was at the hardware store today, and I saw a propane regulator for a camp stove, that goes between 0 and 15 psi, perfect for mr. riel's ez burner

http://www.reil1.net/burner.gif

it looks like it'll fit right on that pipe nipple, but the end that would screw on there looks like it has a tire valve stem end on it (push in a little pin to open the valve etc.)except that the threads are on the inside to screw onto the burner ...

I wanna make myself a propane forge some day, and do it cheaply, and this regulator is in my price range, and fits my barbeque tank to boot...
any ideas on how I can get this thing to attatch to that 1/8 pipe nipple without that valve closing?

what about safety issues? I like my eyeballs

priced at $35 canadian....I think we're at .67 usd right now...is there a better alternative?
