damascus bolster

Hello,

I was wondering what needs to be done to the damascus bolster blocks after they are cut/shaped/etc. the site states needs to be etched so what type of setup do I need to do that? Also does anyone know how hard the metal is?

Hey Ed,

Sorry it took so long for someone to answer your question...but the answer(s) requires more than any quick response.

There are a number of ways to finish off damascus, and etching is the most popular. But there are also other ways including coloring damascus, which can be quite breathtaking. What's great is that you can experiment with various methods and if you don't like what you get, you can sand it off and try again (other than an especially deep etch, for the most part etching or coloring damascus only effects the surface).

There is an incredible wealth of info in these forums. Quite a few years worth if knowledge passed along by some of the greatest knifemakers in the world. I did a quick search using the key words, "etching" and "damascus"... Here's an especially informative thread by one of the "fathers of damascus", Steve Schwarzer. Try other combinations of words under search and see what else you can find (damascus etch, finishing damascus, color damascus, you get the idea).
