Great News This Morning about my No Weld Grinder!
I was talking to my friend in MD and he's going to ship me a 2hp (anything bigger requires 220) Baldor or Leeson NEW motor, with an seperate electronic digital variable speed control setup already wired for 120. So basically it will come off the UPS truck ready to mount.
Now he was talking about the speed control being able to increase the motors output to 3 phase instead of household electric or something (not real sure, all the tech talk about motors was greek to me) Ok, I need to know what size of pulley needs to be put on the shaft coming out of the motor. Anyone know? He also said he has loads of pulleys in stock or can special order some after I told him it was driving a sanding belt. So, let me come down from my cloud................lol What type of pulleys do I need for this application, or am I better off just ordering the plans myself? Remember I am trying to get into this on the cheap because I don't have hardly any money to waste. Last edited by Hurley; 09-13-2013 at 11:47 AM. |

Most residential homes do not have 3 phase, just single phase 120v/240v.
Though it is possible that your motor can be wired 120,240 (single phase) or 208(3phase). But you can only wire it up to what you have at your place(most likely 120/240) unless you get a phase converter which is pricey. ~Nate |

He's gonna get one of his guys to wire it up for 120, I did make sure to tell him that I needed 120 not 240. And he said something about the speed control being a converter that could boost the motor to 3 phase or something. I told him I only needed 120v, don't need higher electric bills . Heck I was just elated to get the setup so cheap!

From the sound of it, he's sending you a 3-phase motor with a VFD controller/converter and that's a good thing.
The pully should be smallish, the exact size doesn't matter because you will adjust the ratio of the pulleys when you build the rest of the grinder. Something around 2" or 3" would be good.... |

I'll be sure to post pics when the setup arrives!

What Ray said, that's the usual conversion. It will work well, best if you can have a dedicated 20amp breaker just for the grinder set up.
