Building a grinder ?

I'm going to build a grinder, and I'm wondering if you fellas have any suggestions for a good motor to run it?

I'm limited to 110v in my garage, so it has to be 110v.

I'm thinking of doing it belt driven and mounted on a cart so I can move it around easily, I'm probably going to mount the motor under the grinder, I'm thinking of using a 3 step pulley in 2", 3", 4" I'm going to build the chassis and order some of the parts from Beaumont.

There are so many motors to choose from and I just want to make sure I get a motor that will do a good job and last awhile.

Thanks for your input.

Besides the voltage you have running to your garage, take a look at what amperage your breaker is capable of for that line.

Then, get as much HP as that system will handle--likely a 1 HP or 1.5 HP will be the best you can find. Try to get TEFC--totally enclosed fan cooled--to keep grinding dust out.

My grinder runs off a 3/4 hp motor and it's barely enough. If I push too hard, or work on a large blade, the motor will stall. If i had my way (or more money) I'd get a variable speed DC motor...

I just put together a Coot 2x72 grinder and one of the motors he recommended was.

http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.as...1&item=10-2380

Basicly you need a sealed motor to keep debris out. You will need a minimum of 1 hp. I ordered a 1.5 HP and while it works, 2 hp would not be too much. You also need one rated for continuous use. 1725 RPM will be what you want.

here is a pic of mine as I put it together last week. I just threw something together temporary on a stand I already had and modified. But it is done similar to what you describe. I figured out the pulleys were on wrong (there were no instructions) after I took this pic, but you get the idea.

Yeah I'm going to get the 1 1/2 1725, most of the 2hp are 220v I'm going to copy the kmg as close as I can, im going to get started on it Saturday, do y'all think the motor posted on kmg's site is alright? I'm assuming it is, I'll call Rob tomorrow and order the flange bearings etc, but I might be able to find a motor locally and not have to pay shipping.

I'm sure any motor Rob offers would be fine but Grizzly also sells many suitable motors. Might be worth checking just as a price comparison ...

I just ordered one from grainger, it's got the same specs as the one from Beaumont, and is about the same price, I just won't have to pay shipping and I pick it up tomorrow.

no weld grinder. you can get the plans at usaknifemaker.com thats what I have been using for the past 3 1/2 years. Mine has a 1 hp 110v motor, and I have been able to get by just fine. I think that a 1 1/2 hp motor would be just about right. it's great and very versital I would recomend It to anybody thinking about making their own.

I saw that on YouTube, I've got all the wheels, flange bearings and a few other things headed this way from Beaumont, I'll post pics of the one I build later.

Check and see if you have a local electric motor sales and repair shop. I found a refurbished one at mine and it was at a fraction of the cost. Also I bought the no weld grinder plans and used them for dimensions to help me create my own. Between that and watching videos on YouTube (to get ideas of what I wanted) I built my own grinder. Got all the steel from a scrap pile at a local place that makes metal trusses. I have all the drawings that I created for mine if you want a copy. Good luck and look forward to seeing it.

That looks good, mine is going to be similar but for the spring setup I'm going to use a shock thing like they use on a cars trunk lid.
