Bored Huhh?
Well i can keep you busy for a minute or two. tell me everything you know about bainite. After that tell me everything you know about making and using a high temp oil tank for quenching blades and maintaining that magic 400 degree temp.I dont wish to use salts due to the danger factor and the corrosive nature of the salts. i am genuinly interested in this and not just trying to keep you busy, any and all information will be greatly appreciated.McAhron

This is pretty easy. I don't know anything about either of those topics. Hopefully, Kevin Cashen will stop in and answer those questions for you. He knows all about that fancy stuff. I'm just one of those high alloy, let the heat treater do all the work so I can take the credit kind of guys. The only thing I use 400 degree oil for is to fry turkeys...

Hey Jerry you may be onto something here. Tai does his full moon, oriented north, super magic forging, we may have to start the misterious thanksgiving blade. Tempered while frying a 20 pounder, but only a butterball, with peanut oil, over a gas flame before 2 pm.............

We don't deal with magic. The Ms temperature varies with different steels, it may be about 400F for things like O-1 or close to 500F for others. The time to start and complete the bainite transformation also varies....I can give you a link to download a book [~400 pages ] about bainite if you are really interested. It's got stuff that's even over the head of this metallurgist !!.....Time and temperature are just as important when cooking turkey ,my brother had some this Christmas that was way overcooked . ....I've never looked at turkey under a microscope so I don't know if there's a bainite transformation. I don't even have a bainite blade to carve turkey !!

You won't get bainite with 10xx steels.

McAhron don't bail yet. We're just filling space and time untill Kevin shows up. He is probable THE guy to answer this question, he spends ALOT of time working these things out. You may try pm'ing or emailing him. Hes good about helping others serious about learning.
Jerry Wootz turkey may suck but Its got to look better than anything my wife tried this past thanksgiving |

Jerry ,the problem with getting bainite from 10xx steels is to drop the temperature quickly to just above the Ms with salt which doesn't cool that fast . I suppose an interrupted quench might do it .Maybe somebody has tried it........aiiifish, www.msm.cam.ac.uk/phase-trans/newbainite.html ....... You can down load that . There may be other things on that website that would be of interest to some of you , the bainite book is far too technical for most.

Sorry but I may not be of much help, I am a martensite kind of guy that finds bainite to be a bit over-rated, and while I do agree that salts must be respected, quenching into 400F. oil scares me a lot more.

Disillusionment in 26 hours. That MUST be a new world record.
