my decision on a oven is final.

Today I ordered the km24d with the flow meter and solenoid. No tax and I will pick it up in Mesquite in a few weeks. Total price was $1,594.80 I still need to get regulators and a bottle. I'm stoked!!

Good call. Congrats! Soon you'll be able to heat treat just about anything.

I cannot imagine life without one.

In the 2 years I've been using 1084 and I have the system down pat, so if any of you fellers have some tried and true recipes, send them my way. I've been using propane so this is a whole new game for me.

Sounds great! And really great you pay no tax and get to pick it up! I imagine they charged you no shipping also? Enjoy!

Initially I went here http://www.evenheat-kiln.com/?pg=tec...ng-information. So it's the "other" company , but was helpful for me. You'll note they describe air and oil quenching methods which is typical for stainless. I prefer plate + air quench, others feel oil is the way to go. You'll find what works best for you.

Now keep a small binder in the shop with datasheets and graphs that I refer to.

I am a "foil guy", so I can't help you with the inert gas tips.

Best of luck with your new endeavours,

Dan

I check the data sheet first when deciding what type of quench to use. If the factory thinks that air, plates, or oil is the way to go with their steel they will say so. For many steels more than one of those methods will be approved but don't expect to get the same results with all of them.

For instance, with 440C I have always been very pleased with the results I get from simple quenching in still air plus cryo. Oil quenching would likely give a bit more hardness but the air provides above Rc 60 at quench and that's plenty for the knives I make from 440C (mostly kitchen knives). Boehler N695 which is a substitute for 440C doesn't air quench worth a darn, oil is required before I can get it to match the performance I get from 440C.

Then there's S30V. Great steel, and the data sheet says air (above 2 atm) , plates, or oil are all acceptable. They are all acceptable but you really have to lower your expectations if you don't use the oil. In fact, the only way to get the 'super steel' performance from S30V that we read about that works for me is an interrupted oil quench with a 2 atm air follow up.

So, all I'm saying here is that you can use any method specified by the data sheet and expect to get reasonable results but the different methods will most likely produce different results (some better than others) ...
