How do you chamfer?

I have completed my first knife, a DDR3 BL G10 scales, except for chamfering the screw holes in the scales and bolsters. I have searched and not found specifically how it is done. I have the Fixed Blade Kit Assembly DVD and it shows Darrel doing it with a bit of some sort. I have looked at my home improvement stores to no avail. Let me know what you guys use. It just does not look finished to me. A few pics of the almost finished knife. I did put in the spring and it is awesome.

Thanks guys.

There are special bits for chamfering. Basically it is a cone with cutting edges. That's one way.

I happen to have a ball-headed 1/4" carbide grinding burr that I use. I chuck it in the drill press and draw the work into it by hand.

Very nice work. Good for you!

What Coop said...

Very nice job. The red spacers looks great against the cleanly fileworked liners!

Well done!

As an aside...I want to comment about the photos. It's a long-standing personal beef of mine. I have absolutely nothing against firearms..but I think that everytime someone posts pics of a knife sitting alongside a gun it just adds fuel to the perception that knives are seen as weapons rather than as tools. Heck, baseball bats are used more often as weapons...I personally believe that it's photos like these that contribute to the overwhelmingly negative publicity that knives have been getting for the past few years. The last thing we need are pics that enhance that image. I'm sure there are plenty of other props that could still be very effective and at the same time get across a more positive, publicity friendly image for the knife.

Just my 2 cents (BTW-Other than my comment about the gun prop, nice job on the photos).

There are bits sold everywhere that are used for chamfering - though they sometimes aren't called "chamfering bits". I've mostly seen them called "countersinks". Head to Woodcraft.com and do a search for "countersink" and you'll find a good selection of sizes and types. I prefer the single-flute bits for ease of use on wood and softer manufactured materials (acrylic, vulcanite, delrin, etc) and I've used them with good results on G10 and carbon fiber.

Flat head screws have an 82 degree taper under the head.

So get an 82 degree countersink bit from an industrial supply company. C'sink bits are made with different tapers. Some people use a 90 degree c'sink bit to remove the burrs from the top edges of holes.

There is a counter sink set at Harbor Freight. It is a set of three that attach to a handle. What I really like about it is that the handle spins.

Here's a rough drawing. I love it. Fast, clean and easy to use.

It's about $5-$7.

Just to make my point clear...

I generally intensely dislike all things PC. This is not at all about being politically correct...Quite the contrary. If anything it's more about trying to do whatever we can (no matter how little it may seem) to undo damage that's been done to the way in which the public perceives knives, by those who are politically motivated.

I was just offering my opinion. You are more than welcome to continue posting photos such as these. That's your call.

Well not to offend dennis, but I think guns and knives look great together. I do not feel that pictures like these give any kind of bad name to the knife industry. Allow me to commend you on your gun choice. The springfield XD series are the best guns I have ever shot. That said, the knife looks great. Excellant work. Keep them coming.

By the way, welcome to the forums! Your first knife is truely a job well done. I know from experiance that putting the red spacers on the bolster as well as the liner can be challenging.

I agree with Don, the 82 degree is what you want. I got one from texas knifemakers supply that has a cutting bit on both ends so when one gets dull, flip it over and use the other end.

I'll keep my opinion on the gun to myself but you've got a lot of other cool props you could use that go well with knives. Try a few of your favorite flys( flies?) laying around or some of your optics on your bow...

With all due respect, a gun is a tool.

Like it or not guns are perceived by most of the public as weapons...whereas, everyone in the world has knives in their home and until the politically correct repercussions following 9/11 they were generally perceived by most as tools. Used as everyday tools since the dawn of mankind, knives are now viewed by the general public as weapons...(until someone needs to cut a piece of rope or open up a package). Everytime the public at large sees a photo of a knife sitting alongside a gun, both are perceived as weapons (and not tools).

These days we have to fight to justify to a lot of folks, why carrying a knife everyday is perfectly reasonable (IE. we're carrying what is probably the most useful of all tools). When I was a kid a young boy wouldn't even think of leaving his house without a pocketknife...now they're expelled if they're found carrying one.

The more press we can get showing knives as tools, the better it is for the cause. Things are tough enough for knife advocates without us having to take on the gun fight as well.

Well I'm sorry to disagree with you, but been there and done that. In the UK there were calls , which were sadly listened to to ban handguns.now we cannot own them. currently there is a "knife amnesty" so that we can all dispose of our "weapons".........same folks that wanted guns banned, and look at the UK. Crime is thru the roof..............the only folks with rights are the criminals.
I say stick with the NRA, they will fight for the right to defend yourself. doesn't matter what you call them knives will be called "Weapons " by the Socialist elite bent on taking your rights away from you

Exclamation Last Resort

I don't want to make my first post here a political statement, but I think it needs to be said especially here.

Jorvik, I wish more people would listen to you. We have given in to the unreasonable to the point we feel it's unreasonable to try to be normal. Here's something we need to remember in our own context.

"In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me--and by that time no one was left to speak up. "

Martin Niemoller

Replace the different people with Machinegun, Handgun, Rifle, and Knife and you'll see where we're headed.

Yoffione, you did a great job on your knife. I only wish you could have taken a picture of it next to your MP-5.

We are on our way out people if we don't kill PC now!! Don't allow it.

Just remember the children's saying, Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me. It's a sad comment that we have allowed our societies to twist that into something perverse, to the point we feel we have to comment about a picture.

One last thing. Of course a knife is a weapon, just like a stone, a hammer, or a sharpened stick in the hands of someone set on doing harm. My question is, will you allow someone to paint you as unstable for wanting to own a tool that can be used as a weapon?

Keep em sharp.

Ok it's time for my two cents worth...guns ARE tools the same as a knife. It can be used for both good and bad, heck so can a screwdriver. But what it comes down to is this....the clamor for gun control in this country is due soley to the United Nations..wake up people and READ the U.N. charter...it states that there can be NO privately owned firearms anywhere in the world. It really makes no difference what WE think as far as gun control, when the time comes for them to be banned then in all likelyhood they will be...the politicians have boiled the proverbial frog (brainwashing)..enjoy while you can and pray it never happens..oh..nice job on the knife!!
