full time production is very hard unless you have an established customer base. if you don't have 3 years salary in the bank i wouldn't stop your day job. your web site needs to be linked to every living history website that will accept it. your website also needs better photos, most are too dark to see any detail. maybe the purchase of a good digital camera and some time spent here in the photo discussion forum can help . the economy is not as rosy as the news broadcast state.

As listed on the website:
Quote:
You absolutely cannot exist in this marketplace without laying groundwork on pricing. First tip. I applaud you wishing to stick with your craft and tradition, but I have serious doubts aboout being able to make this a full-time avocation for you AND your son--based upon the type of knives you are offering. You are limiting yourself to a very niche market--hunters who enjoy traditional and rougher-quality period pieces. I can't imagine this could sustain you. One of the fisrt things a SUCCESSFUL knifemaker finds out is how valuable getting his work in the hands of dealers can be. Not 'selling out' to wholesalers. You aren't at a point to sell to a wholesaler (They, in turn sell to dealers). I say build your customer base to the point that you CAN sustain income and your time is divided to working too hard at two jobs and then concentrate on what has worked best for you. This may be good or bad advice to you--but thanks for asking. Best of luck. Coop |
