Popular/Common Steel Thickness for Folders
I just wanted to get some opinions on steel thickness that you prefer for folders. I know it can vary depending on the style of blade. I am looking to do more of an EDC/gentleman?s type knife, rather than a beefy tactical/survival type. I talked with Aldo from New Jersey Steel and he has so much of an option that it was hard to decide on the phone. I am thinking of blade lengths in the 2-3? range, sleeker profile so that it does not take up much room in the pocket if there is no clip. Also, I am leaning more towards liner lock rather than slip joint. Not sure if the last bits are relevant.

I've made hundreds of liner locks and most were larger tactical knives but not all of them. It really helps to have a surface grinder so that you can adjust the thickness of the blade as needed. But, on knives the size you mentioned I wouldn't go less than 3/32" (.093) nor more than 1/8" (.125). That range would pretty much cover most knives you will see in that size unless you're trying for really ultra thin ....

I use .105 thickness stock , coupled with 2 . 010 standoff washers. That equals .125 (1/8) which is what the spine of my knives are. It works out for most all applications. (this is what I use. Your desires may vary)
