Stupid dangerous accident
I did a really stupid thing the other night. I was heating my bees wax/neatsfoot oil mixture that I use for waterproofing my sheaths. I was heating it in a glass Pyrex container on top of the stove. I got distracted and didn't see how hot the mixture was getting. When I realized it was starting to smoke I immediately slid it off the heating element. And that was the stupid move.
As soon as the Pyrex was moved from a super hot surface to a cooler surface, it exploded. I don't mean it simply cracked and shattered, I mean it literally EXPLODED! Glass, wax and oil went everywhere. I was incredibly lucky that I didn't get hurt. Lesson learned - big time. Just a reminder and a word of warning to everyone. As with all things when it comes to knife making, pay attention to the task at hand, never lose track of what you're doing, never use a glass container to heat your mixture on top of the stove. That's the kind of carelessness that can cause serious injuries. Oh yeah, it also took me over an hour to clean up the mess. Jim T |

I'm not a safety nanny, but a double boiler seems about right for this type of thing. When it got to the smoking point, I'm amazed it didn't flash when it broke. Maybe, I'm not picturing it right, but I'm glad you're ok.
Thanks for sharing the warning, Craig |

Serves me right for letting myself get distracted. Believe me, I'm going to be hyper vigilant from now on.

FWIW,
Wal*Mart sells a small removable crock "Crock Pot" for $10.00 that I use to melt and blend my waxes in. It even has 3 heat settings Low/High/Warm T~ __________________ "Take your time, don't live to fast. Troubles will come, and they will pass" |

You don't mention how old you are but I have found as I have gotten older I get distracted much more easily. I use timers a lot to remind me that I have to watch things. The suggestions of a double boiler or that crock pot to control the heat also are good bits of advice.

I use an old electric perculator that I got at the thrift store. You can dial it down to just barely melted or jack it up to watery hot but don't have to worry about ignition over a burner. Pretty much like T's crockpot. Works just fine in the shop (not in the Missus' kitchen).
