viking dagger
I realise the vikings didn't carry or make daggers, but if they had, it might look something like this...
I made this one for a KITH over at British Blades... I have a hard time not joining KITHs (knife-in-the-hat), I do enjoy a challenge, and it just so happened that I wanted to make a dagger anyway... This one is 1095 with a wrought iron core, my first edge-wrap style construction. The handle is walnut, with copious amounts of copper for the fittings, and a touch of brass. Overall length is 11 1/2", with a 7" blade. Thanks for looking! __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |

Very nice looking work sir! Would you care to share some of the points about the edge wrapping you did? This is the first one I have seen and would like to know more.

Usually the steel for the edge is one continuous piece wrapped completely around the core iron, but I wanted the extra material for a long, narrow point... This method has a long history, I have seen Celtic swords from 200-300BC that had higher quality more refined steel wrapped around a lower quality core. The method reached it's heyday during the Migration period (where the center core was composed of multiple twisted bars) and gradually fell out of use in the late Viking period. This is a link to one Jake Powning made a few years ago that has some good information about the methods...http://www.powning.com/jake/commish/progress1.shtml The next one I make using this construction method will be a lot more elaborate, with the twisted rods in the core. This one was to see if I could even pull it off... __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |
