rusty 1075

I have about 500 lbs of 1075 that I use for damascus. Some of the pieces have some hard rust on them. I used to never worry about the lighter rust before making a damascus billet but the last couple billets must have had some heavy rust as I ended up with a couple flaws. Not saying it was caused by this but I am going to clean my damascus stock before making the billet from now on.
I built a tumbler for cleaning small parts that I cut with my cnc plasma that works very good. I put in about 20 lbs of 1075 in this morning along with some silica sand and small circles of steel from punching holes with our iron worker and it clean the rust off completely. Sure beats grinding.

That is just plain COOL! I've often looked at my little whimpy vibratory tumbler and though that I'd like something "better".....that is down right inspirational!

I did another batch of 20 lbs or so and really impressed with how clean the steel comes out. I will be doing it all this way.

Here is what some of the 1075 looked like prior to tumbling and after tumbling.
