not quiet done
Well I finally finished my first blade and I was hoping to get some constructive criticism on it. It is 440c using the stock removal method mirror polished up to 2000 grit. I didn't have any machines so the blank was cut with a hack saw and hand filed to shape. There's a false edge on top of it also. http://photos.yahoo.com/billybadass122001

Looks good from here. Can't imagine doing the grinding by hand.
Make sure you post pics of the finished knife. Very nice start, especially for your first one. |

can't tell the size from your photo, arrow, but i know that any blade made with hand tools can be labor-intensive. good work.
what are you planning for the handle? __________________ wayne things get better with age ... i'm approaching magnificent Last edited by whv; 03-21-2003 at 06:03 PM. |

Nice job. Especially for being done with files. The line on your false edge, looks nice. and it's got about the right proportion to the cutting edge. But I really can't tell much more from that photo. Any chance for a photo showing the whole blade, including the tang. And adding some object for scale (a penny?) would help too.

Thanks! That helps a great deal. Overall, it looks pretty good. The only concern I have is in the line of the tang. If you attach scales to your current tang shape, the handle is going to look bulky compared to the blade. There is always a trade off, between what fits the hand and what looks good

even if....
even if i curve the bolsters towards the back of the handle from top to bottom kind of a "C" shape without the bottom part of the "c" will it still look bulky. my intentions were to curve the bolsters back revealing as much of the mirror polished blade as possible to make the blade look bigger. thanks for the help.

The problem isn't in the bolster area. But, rather in the area where the handle swells in the middle. The bolster area is fine. I would slim down the swell of the handle. That will also make the hooked line at the butt on the handle more pronounced.
However, this is just one opinion. You need to please yourself first, above all. As I said, the blade shape looks great. And you are way ahead of where I was on my first effort. __________________ Scott B.
