Finally!!Made My Own
Hi Guys,
I've been a part time knife maker for about five years, and I'm finally producing some decent knives. But, until recently, I had other folks make my sheaths. Well, in the past few weeks, I made two fairly decent sheaths for my own knifes. I will post pictures this weekend, but I just wanted to tell you guys how good it feels to not only made a knife, but the sheath as well. It's a ...well, kinda a warm glow. Feels good. No one told me how tough it is to keep the thread from trying itself in knows all by itself, or how hard it is to get a smooth outer edge (and I didnn't), or how hard it is to get a decent dye job, or...and most important, how to form a sheath which does not "streak" the blade every time you holster the blade ( and I still can't figure that out, as the sheath pressure does in fact leave marks, but which can be easly cleared with a cloth). Anyway, I've read all of the tutorials, and just wanted to thanks all of you for your help. From the deep woods, Dave __________________ Dave Stifle |

Dave this is a good place to ask questions when you post your pictures. Like most things there is no right way and wrong way, but there are things that work better than others and that is what you have to figure out. A lot of it is doing it in order and not going to the next step until you finish the previous one. Kind of like knife making. And like knife making, the more you make the easier they get. A word of warning these things can be habit forming. I look forward to seeing the ones you have completed.

Thanks Harry,
I think I already got the leatherworking bug. Working with leather is a lot more fun than I ever thought it would be. I agree this forum is a great place to ask questions and to learn, and I intend to take full advantage. By the way, Harry, I have always admired the knives you guys make. Especially liked the knife you made a while back with the dimensionally carved ivory handle. Regards, Dave __________________ Dave Stifle |
