Couple headed for the PKA show
Here are two knives headed for the PKA show in abou a week.
Both knives use O1 toolsteel and have handstiched sheaths. Up to now I have used pre-dyed leather. Never again! Using the raw leather, dying it myself etc, was so much easier and the results were a lot better! This first one has girraffe bone scales and has a sheath much like the one below but it is light brown. (It was not finished when I was taking the pictures.) This was my first time using girrafe bone and I am really happy with how it turned out. I will be doing more of these. This one is desert ironwood. The pics don't do it justice as if you roll it around in the sun you can see fire shimmering all through it. Ironwood with sheath Comments welcome. Let me know what you think. __________________ David Johansen http://www.dsjblades.com |

Very nice! Someday, try the sheath natural David, no finish except for something clear. It'll really show your pattern nicely.

Those are pretty "Spiffy" David......... I really like the shape of both knives. O-1 is hard to beat for a good working knife.
The leather work looks great........... I'll bet they won't last long on your table. Thanks for sharing.......... Robert |

Thanks Guys!! I am excited to see what kind of reception I get. I haven't done a show since Vegas and have gotten a lot better (most dramatically in my sheaths) since then. I'm crossing my fingers. Thanks for all your good wishes and I will let you know how it goes.
rhrocker, I will have to give that a try..... I like the sound of that. __________________ David Johansen http://www.dsjblades.com |

David, my friend---Robert (rhrocker) is right on about the natural leather approach for carved or stamped leather. This is particularly true with basket weave. It can be enhanced further with the use of a high lighter applied over a sealer such as "Leather Sheen". The high lighter will darken the stamped impressions and will give a contrast between the surface from which it has been wiped clean. The Leather Sheen will act as a "resist" to prevent darkening the leather itself. ---Sandy---

Thanks Sandy! I took rhrocker's advice and made on e that way for the show. I liked it but it seemed to need something more. So I am definitely going to try what you described here. Thanks again! Anytime you see something I can improve on my sheaths or knives please let me know.
A quick report on the PKA show: It was my first time going to this show and it was my best show by far. I took 12 knives and came back with 3. Needless to say I was pretty excited. This was my 3rd show and the first one where I have really sold quite a few. As always I met some more of the awesome knifemakers that are out there. Met some old friends and made some new ones. What more could a guy ask for. Anyway it is a show I highly recommend! __________________ David Johansen http://www.dsjblades.com |
