what I've been up to lately
Some of what I've been up to lately...
Blade made of 2 opposing twists of 1084 and 203e, framed with 203e, framed with W1, 7 5/16" long, 1 5/16" wide, .29" thick. Handle is 5400 year old bog oak, sheath is leather with bronze fittings and brass rivets and rings. Overall length is 13 7/16". Not based on any particular original, but hopefully captures the spirit of the originals. Not sure what to say about this one, someone wanted a stag-handled pattern-welded hunter on short notice, and this is the result. Steel is 11 layers of 1084 and 15n20, blade is 5 inches long, 7/8" wide, and .15" thick... 9 5/8" overall. A pattern-welded pair of seax in maple... overall lengths are 14 3/8 and 7 1/2 inches. A Persian kard, with briar and turkish pattern steel. And a budget utility/hunter, 1084 and English walnut.... __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |

Hey George,
What did you use to finish your maple handles? They look really good! Doug Jn. 3:16 |

Thank you everyone!
Damon, the bog oak came from burlsource, he doesn't always have it, and he has this tendency to want to stabilize everything, but he is the only one in the US I am aware of (and trust) that does carry it from time to time. Doug, I use aqua fortis (nitric acid) to stain my maple, there is a really good tutorial here by Alan L that I must give credit to.... http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/sh...ht=aqua+fortis There are simpler stains out there, but with this method I get to play with dangerous chemicals and fire... __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |
