Surface Grinders "Yeah Baby"
I picked up a surface grinder a few months back. I've been using it for cleaning up damascus barstock and guards. Yesterday I used it on a folder. WOW,
 I can hardly believe it. No more sitting at the disk sander roughing it in, then hours upon hours of handsanding to get it flat and parallel. I heard someone say a while back that they couldn't believe people would make folders without one. At the time I didn't understand what they meant. Now I do!!!! This thing will probably save me 4-5 hours on each folder I make. Maybe now I can start making money at this knifemaking career. Okay, maybe that last comment was over the edge but I can always dream right. Just had to get this off my chest. congrats! I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a surface grinder and want one pretty bad.

It's funny how we never really understand just how important a tool can be until we get one! I did the same thing as Jon...hours upon hours of hand flattening folder parts. It took me a couple of years to save the money for my surface grinder, but now is one of the "Must Have" tools!
Face it Jon, now you've been spoiled!! (Ain't it great!?)

I am also part of the surface grinder club. Dont know how I lived without it. Flatening bar stock fixing mistakes i made etc. One thing that I am still working out is what grinding wheels to use to get the finish I want etc. I know a lot of guys change them to belts but I am happy the way it is at the moment. Mine is just an old manual grinder but it is still a tremendous help and I bet if I start making folders it is something I wouldnt want to be without!!

Yes I'm spoiled and lovin it!
Mine was converted to belt but it has a dual arbored (terminology) head. Loosen a nut and swived the head 180 deg. and I could set it up with a stone. At least I think it will work, the other shaft isn't as long as the main one so this may pose some problems with the mag. chuck???? Mines also manual, auto would be nice but this will work fine for now. I'll take some pics and get them up on my site ASAP.
