Hello from another newbie.
Hello all, I've been trying to read through as much of the information here as possible so this has been my first chance to post. I've seen alot of incredible work and the technical information has already answered many of the questions that I'd normally be asking right about now - thanks to all of you for sharing what you know.
My wife and I are heading to Blade Friday morning so I hope to see as much of your work first hand as possible. When we get back I intend to start slowly buying some basic equipment and get started on my own knives. I figure if I start now then maybe in a few years I might have something worth selling. I spent a 4 years in a machine shop (CNC lathe man, surface grinder, etc.) and have spent the last 7 as a CADD tech so I'm getting the jist of most of what I'm reading and have some experience with the equipment overall. Hopefully that'll be help the learning process along. High on my "Blade shopping list" is Mr. Atwood's framelock video. While that won't be the first knife I try to make, it'll be the first folder when that time comes. Many thanks to all of you for sharing your knowledge, there really is no better resource than asking the professionals. Anyway I just wanted to say hi before seeing you at the show, I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as I get deeper into this. Jack O'Ree

Good Lord man. With your past experience, you will take to this "hobby" like a duck to water!!! I only wish I had your background. Best of luck in the upcoming months... Chris

Man, but do I ever wish I had even a fraction of your machine shop experience. You haven't even begun and you're already ahead of the game!

Thanks for the welcome guys, it's much appreciated. The equipment I've used was a bit different than what I'll be buying but hopefully the principles will be the same: Recognizing and correcting tool chatter, locating and milling holes... you'll only forget to remove a chuck key from the machine once. You know, the important stuff!
Sure am glad I kept my calipers and mikes now. Jack

You will take to it well. It is the mechanical ability that seems to make this all work easier. All the machines in the world are useless unless you can "Think" about how to do things. There are some people here that are really good at thinking out their project and coming up with ways to do the things they don't have a machine for. Your background will help you with this.
