The seven shot buck

Figured I would post these knives down here! Thought you folks would appreciate the story. So here goes

It was the typical deer season for us out here in PA. I had made the second week of it still deerless. My last day to hunt was a wednesday afternoon. So my friend and I headed for the woods. Just before we left he said lets walk behind the house(he has 5 acres) I proceeded to tell him he was nuts lets get to the farm we hunt. He insisted so I went along with it, just as we were about to turn back to go to the farm, out jumped a buck. My buddy got off three quick shots all misses. Thanks to some snow we found the fresh tracks and some blood. He was sure he missed but we felt obligated to track the deer. Well it took us a mile into the woods and onto his neighbors land. But finally we got another chance. My buddy got off three more shots and then i got the final one and the only shot i took.

Needless to say we were thrilled and we had gotten the buck together. It was a 6 pointer which isnt bad and we found out it had a previous wound and that is why we saw blood. That made us both happy to have gotten it cause it wouldnt have lived much longer.

I felt this called for something special from the antlers and after some thinking I felt making two knives out of the antlers one for him and one for me would be great. So below are the pictures of the deer and of the two knives i made.

The knives are 1084 steel flat ground and 3 1/2 inches long on the balde.

Congrats on the deer, and good story to go with the knives. Where in PA do you live, I do alot of hunting in Lycoming County, above a small town called Waterville.

Nice job on the knives! Looks like you've got some points that would handle some smaller knives, some shin bones and then the two upper leg bones work pretty sweet. What brand of deer is it? The few times I've gone bow hunting the deer/elk never seem to be where you'd expect them. Last time I went out for elk we had been out all day and hadn't seen a thing. Got back to camp and ate and I decided to go for alittle walk since there was maybe an hours worth of light left. Didn't get more than a couple hundred yards from camp and here's these 4 elk. Unfortunatly they saw me first.

wow nice knives Ragnick!!!be careful eating that deer meat if that wound was old,wounds can cause serious infections that effect the entire blood stream and can be transmitted to humans if the meat isnt cooked to at least 145 degrees.

thanks for the tip and we figure the wound was maybe 3 days old from the looks of it it was through the front shoulder. we had to waste that part it wasnt fit to eat at all.

Yep The other points may make some smaller knives, maybe even neck knives. They are in the pile for now. The deer is a whitetail, and I did save two of the back leg bones to try and make handles out of so we shall see. The seven shot buck may have quite a few knives in him. As far as your comment on camp! I think that is the way it works all the old timers that have camps have always said the cook who stays back gets the most deer every year. Wonder why that is???? I bet its fun to hunt elk though someday I may have to venture out west.

I live in a town called Duncansville its very close to Altoona. I grew up in the poconos in wayne and pike county(near Lake wallenpaupack) I did a lot of hunting up there.

Nope these arent for sale!! Thats why i made it keep the memory alive so to speak it was a special hunt for both me and my buddy and this is just a great way to remember it. Its been a long time since either of us tracked a deer like that!!! Course once great grand kids would get a hold of them no telling what might happen LOL!!!!(course i may want to get some kids first) I will have to print out the story to keep that is a good idea I have the pictures already.

bruce: there are two the indor one at the antique depot and the one ar leightys(sp?) which is outdoors. I have been at both from time to time I dont remember seeing your buddy though I will have to look closer when I am there. The on outside is huge its easy to miss stuff!!!
I know there are peple there selling knives from time to time so I may have seen him!!! What kind of knives are they (factory, custom, fantasy??)

He was in the Antique depot, Ross. Sold a lot of Queen/Schatt/ Ontario stuff.Lately been heavy into mil. surplus. Had all sorts of blades tho. He had a little bait shop over in Patton. He's a cranky sob but if ya run into him tell 'im Hi.
