Black Cat Bone
First one for 2013:
Here?s the first of a pair I?m working on from a mountain lion femur bone. Both will be freestanding like this one. The last pic shows the other end of the cougar femur I plan to use for the second knife. This one is about 14-? inches OAL, with sterling silver fittings and a 1095 blade. |

Very cool, excellent silver work, wicked blade shape, and a cool handle too....

Amazing, as always!
I really like the coloring on the bone. Do you dye it or is that some sort of natural coloring? __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

Thanks guys.
TJ, It?s a two step ?ebonizing? process, more like a patina than a pigmented die. First, the bone is soaked in a tannic solution from pecans shells in water. The second step uses ?vinegaroon?, (steel wool dissolved in vinegar), brushed on and allowed to dry. The iron in the vinegaroon reacts with the tannin and turns black. |
