cpm 154 flex
I have a cpm 154 blade that is roughly 7 inches long plus the handle. It's a tapered tang handle with a distal taper ground in the blade. It's the longest full tang blade I've done. I started with .165 stock hoping to make a good camp knife with a possibility of light chopping. It has a bit of flex which is what my question is about. It will have bolsters and the handle material itself will stiffen it up in the handle area. My question is how much of this flex will dissappear in the heat treat process? It's not much now enough to notice, but I hope it disappears. Do I need to maybe go to a thicker stock or is the flex ok?
Here's a picture to get an idea. The blade is 7 inches and an 1.25" width for the main part of the blade. |

Ryan, I make smaller folder blades, not big ones like that, but I've found that the CPM powdered metals are remarkably flexible. That makes a blade so much better than one that will break if put in a bind.
I think your blade made of 5/32" stock will be just great!! |

By the way, nice grinds on your blade.

Mr. Robinson,
Appreciate the help I'll probably leave it be then. Thanks for the grind compliment. By the way hope you got things worked out and you are feeling better. |

Thanks, Ryan. I had surgery that cured me and I'm getting better every day. I'm back to building knives for my customers.
