First knife finish question...
This is my first attempt at making a knife... My wife gave me a Drop Point Hunter for Christmas.. I had some old wood from furnature in the basement, and formed my handle from that... Here are a few pictures so far, and I have one question... Now that I have the stain the way I want it, what do you guys suggest for a gloss finish? Thanks in advance..

Just a few coats of wax. Generally I like to use a blend of Carnuba and Bee's wax. Works real nice!!!!

I like to use an oil finish and then buff with white compound once it's dry. I've used boiled linseed and tung, I've heard good things about teak oil too.

if you are looking for a natural finish that will come up great..
then linseed oil .. tung oil .. the natural oil i use for handles is danish oil.. gives a nice finish and the wood you've used would suck it up nicely i bet. then just a rub down with some carnuba wax and it will be shiny as can be. Last edited by Dementia; 07-28-2007 at 09:56 PM. |

I've had good luck with first using a tung oil finish - a couple of applications to get the grain to show up nicely, then when its all cured (I leave it a week or so in warm-ish weather) then a couple of coats of Birchwood Casey's Truoil finish - sanded lightly with OOOO steel wool between coats. Gives it a nice durable shine and the wood figure shows up great. Jason.
