This one is done. A little different.

1084 hunter. The handle and guard fit very nice. Although the shadow makes it look like it doesn't. I have been saving this block of stabilized wood for over a year, waiting for just the right project. I decided this was the knife. Unfortunately, as soon as I started shaping I ran into 2 bark inclusions. That changed my options on handle shape and I decided on a tapered oval. I have seen it on a few knives where it looks very nice. I Havnt decided if I like it on this one. I guess that's the nature of the beast with burl. Overall, this is one of my favorite hunters. What do you think?

I think it looks great! But, looks to me like you should have plenty of material to shape that handle just about any way you would like. The handle would be even better with some contour ....

Its a good looking knife. A shapely handle would make it pop more, but i certainly would put it into the successful completed knife pile. The vast majority of the wood i use is burl and inclusions are always an issue. I started to profile the handles to close to finish size and thus eliminated most of the inclusion surprises.

Thanks. I was leaning toward making some changes with the handle. But I put this on my face book page at 1:30 this morning after i finished it for feedback. and it was sold when I woke up. Nice.

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks. the handle is not my cup of tea. But I've been showing it here at work and people like it. So I guess it stays. Here is another view. The guy who bought it just messaged me asking for another for his wife but wants to know if I can do turquoise inlay on Hers. Lol. Well no reason I can't. Except I never have and I don't have any turquoise. Lol

Buy some turquoise recon stone and use it for a spacer. You can see me doing that very thing in that Shop Chef video. Recon stone is cheap and easy to use, it works with the tools you already have. A spacer done this way is far easier than an inlay and better protected from damage. As a general rule, I would say never accept a commission for something you have never practiced as it almost always will turn into a serious burden if not an out right failure. But, a spacer made of recon stone is simple and easy: she gets her turquoise and you don't have to instantly master a completely new skill ....

Recon stone is available from most of the popular knife supply places. Jantz for sure, probably knifekits.com, K&G, usaknifemakers, etc Cost is about $15 per slab usually ....

Here it is at Jantz:

http://www.knifemaking.com/category-...show=50&page=1

Note that they have about 80 different stones so you will need to look through several pages to see all of it.

Not knowing the name of something like that, knowing it exists but not what they currently call it, is a prime reason I like having the paper catalogs on hand. No hidden pages that way ....
