Field mice move around under the snow in winter, usually in the grass just below the snow but they can tunnel through the snow when they need to. You rarely get to see these tunnels because they are buried in the snow but due to some rapid freezing followed by some rain the snow got frozen into ice and then exposed when the outer snow was washed away. The picture is of an 8 x 8 foot section of my yard next to the porch with visible mouse tunnels ...

pics of the forge rebuild. i repurposed the boiler from a jewelry steamer for the forge body. #### thing is 3/8" thick!! 9" diameter, 12" long. interior is 4.5"x 10" used styrofoam and blue masking tape to form the interior cavity. BTW the blue masking tape makes for a great release agent against the castable refractory.
reused some of the other parts to build the ribbon burner with castable high temp refractory an a very expensive $1 box of crayons. scavenged parts from old forge for the fuel/air intake. from cold forge it took 6min to bring a 3" piece of 1" round bar to forging temp. and if i run it wide open it might melt it. the floor is a pair of hard fire brick that i can swap out if/as necessary. i still have more work to do welding a shelf around the body, legs, and a retractable tool rest. lots of upgrades and renovations to the shop this year. |
