Springfield Randalls??????????

A friend of mine picked up a Springfield Randall at an estate sale.....The knife is in used condition......blade is about 90-95% with staining and some light rust......the guard is loose and I think upside down......handle is stacked leather w/ faded spacers at each end and what looks like two thin aluminum spacers in the center........the butt cap is ovoid...aluminum and has rough tool marks on it. I assume this was one of the leftover blades that someone finnished in his home shop.. sheath looks original...not too bad...still has the stone.....half the keeper strap is busted off, but is still w/ the sheath.

I was wondering if one of you guys might know the value of such a find. I would say the condition is fair to good.
Thanks
Mace

Hi Mace,

If you can post a photo, I think I can give you a good idea if it is a "Northhampton Cutlery" Springfield or a "Larson basement" Springfield or whatever as well as an idea of value.

Hi Mace!

You may wish to read the two articles written by Robert Hunt on the "Springfields", posted on his www.randallcollector.com website.

Please see here: http://www.randallcollector.com/Archives.html

Bob Hunt is the author of two incredible books about Randall military knives, and they are still available, as you will see on his website.

Hi Mace,

Other than the upside down hilt and aluminum spacers in the middle of the handle (which I've never seen before) it "looks" to be assembled and finished by Northhampton based on the blade grind, handle length and spacers at the butt. This is a bit of a strange one! The sheath is original by Mosser. There was another Springfield in a little better condition that sold on e-bay recently for 3 big ones:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

In my opinion that price was quite a bit inflated.

Note:

1. The handle should be cleaned up a bit so the hilt spacers show and the nut gently tightened so that the whole handle including the hilt firm up (don't try to force it if it's too rusted).
2. I suggest your friend go back to the family of the estate sale and attempt to get some provenance on the knife if possible. If this could be done, the value would increase significantly.

I'll finish up by saying I'm no "expert" by any stretch of the imagination and the foregoing is just my humble opinion.

Thanks very much for sharing. The knife and photos are great.

Best,

Ron
