Rick Bowles "020"

My Little Bear Bowie with scrimshaw #020 from the second batch of 10 knives finished by Rick Bowles in 1981.

A message from Rick about the early knives:

Howdy Bill,
The first ten knives I scrimshawed for Randall were model #3's. The second ten, like yours, were model #12 Little Bears. The following ten were model #8 Trout and Bird.

I've always enjoyed doing birds of prey and your knife (#020) is supposed to be a juvenile red tail hawk. While it is honest work and the best I could do at the time, it's difficult to look at 35 years later.

*** The last picture here is Rick Bowles number "001", which is in the Randall Museum.***

Here is one of the 1st 10 Model 8's scrimmed by Rick:

Here is another (4 1/2") Model 8 scrimmed not too long after the 1st10. It is name etched to Miss Florida 1981:

Here's the 1st time that Rick ever tried color scrim (Belt buckle):

Here is one of my favorite Model 3's. Finger grooved Old Yeller with a blade etch of "WD Randall" and a color scrim by RicK:

Four beautiful pieces! What are Rick's numbers on the Model 8's? I would guess between 30 and 40? There has been some conflicting stories about which were the first model to be done, Model 3's or Model 8's.

Beautiful knives guys. The early Rick Bowles scrim, as he says is "difficult to look at 35 years later", I think it's great to see his early work, as it chronicles his development. Outstanding!

Thanks for posting these works of art. The knives, and the scrim.

Regards, Samg

The number on the Model 8 that is part of the 1st ten scrimmed is 049:

The number of Miss Pitman's knife is 076:

Model 3's were the 1st set of 10. Here's a pic of one (I don't know the scrim number of this one):

Here's a pic of another Model 12 (Again, I don't know the scrim number):

These are 2 of my favorite Rick Bowles scrim knives, with the added bonus of metal engraving by Tom Leschorn.

These photos are from Bob Gaddis' book "Randall Made Knives, The History Of The Man And The Blades pages 270-71

I believe that the knives without serial numbers are even earlier than the actual commissioned knives that Gary sent off to Rick to scratch for him.

It appears that the Model 3 fingergrip knife has an actual date of 1975?

Triathlete scrim

Don Hendrick added the ivory to this one and Rick Bowles scrimmed a red wolf on it.

I think you're right about the 3-6 being earlier than the 1st 10 scrimmed. I wasn't thinking when I posted it.

Where do you get the '75 date? I'm at a loss on that one.

Sorry, but the "Chicken George knife looks like Rick signed it "RB 7-75".... I just can't see it well enough to make it out. Might be "175"?
