The problem with hanging out with Carl....

Here is the problem with hanging out with a guy like Carl. You get really GOOD ideas! Below is a picture of my brand new shovel I bought at Home Depot on Friday night. I also got dirty looks from the staff when I had 15 shovels laid out on the floor Carl.... The close up pictures shows a little bit of the detail, I think it should be pretty nice. It's going on the next one I'll have finished. I'll try to post a picture here when it's done.

Oh yeah, replacement handles cost more than this shovel, so I don't see it being repaired any time soon!

Harry's right, Ryan. I've found myself bent waist deep into waste bins searching for "treasure". Clerks at the local Home Depot shudder when they see me heading to the tool racks, knowing the mess I'm going to make. But, you can find some really good stuff this way. By the way, wanted to thank you for the tip on starting the plunge lines. Tried it on 4 over the weekend and worked much better! Clean and crisp for a change.

Glad it's working out for you Rick. I seem to be a much better teacher than maker!

OK...... So I didn't make it to TrackRock this time. Does that mean that you are not gonna share what the shovel handles are for? Does this mean that you are not gonna share the tip on starting the Plunge Cuts?

Just 'cause I'm from Alabama doesn't mean you have to keep secrets from me!

I don't like secrets either. I showed one to Stephen at Trackrock dealing with tapered tangs and bolsters, even let him take pictures. Course it was around the corner when nobody was looking. I am always interested in an easier (better, quicker, cheaper, etc.) way in doing things and Ryan, this would be a good place to post descriptions and pictures. Or you could do a demonstration at the nest Guild meeting.

I wonder how many of us went through the shovel and ax handles at the Home Depot in Blairsville? They probably thought there was a bunch of new nuts in town.

Harry - that's why I go up on Thursday. I can hit 3 HD's and 1 Lowes on the way!

Robert - Not hard to hide secrets from and 'Bama man, we just write them down.......heh, heh, heh....sorry you couldn't make it. You know how it goes, you're always going to miss something if you're not there every minute. Have you never wondered where I get all that premium curly hickory and ash for my knives? For what you'd pay for one set of premo blanks at the Blade Show you can get as many as 6 or 7 and a shovel head to kick around the shop or use as a dust pan.

Ryan - you wouldn't believe how many shovel heads I've given away. How's the hook holding up? Should be rated for around 400 #'s dead weight.

Here's a little additional advise from a scrounger's perspective.
If the figure doesn't jump out at you with a quick glance, it's not likely to jump out at you no matter how you stain it. Just keep looking and eventually one will knock your eyes out when you see it. They're out there if you look (that is if you don't see my little grey Nissan just pulling out of the parking lot!)

You don't want to over look the hammer handles and hatchet handles either. They are usually kept in a different section of the store. I agree with Carl if you have to really look hard to see the figure, It is not going to look very good as a handle. You don't have to look hard for one that really has the fiddle back. It will jump out at you. I have found myself back at the truck with a prise handle and forgot what I went in for.

You could make some pretty neat water fountains out of them. Just a thought.

I just got attacked at HD by the "handles" rack, just past the shovels and rakes. Two axe handles literally slid off the over-stocked rack (which, for some reason they think needs to be head high) and struck me. First impulse was to hit the floor and writhe around in trade for some HD stock, but then I noticed that they left two magnificently curly handles exposed. Forgot all about the "excruciating" pain and started digging in my wallet for my emergency supply funds. Oh Baby! these are premo pieces, tight curl/fiddle end to end!
Guess HD dodged a bullet this time.
Might see a piece of this on one of my knives at the Blade Show, time permitting.
