Giraffe Bone?
Is Giraffe Bone more dense? More durable? Better color? Is it better than another bone like cow bone or moose bone? Is it even really Giraffe Bone? I ask because I have been lurking, collecting and attempting to make some knives for a while and I just realized how much I read Giraffe bone handle without really thinking about it. I know Camel hair paint brushes are actually squirrel tail hair. Just curious, please forgive the ignorance if this is a something I should already know.

Bob,
Nice to see you here! Yes, it really is giraffe bone and it's pretty expensive because of that. I don't know if it is denser but it is certainly dense enough. The popularity of the material is mostly due to its appearance, I would imagine, and maybe a little because of its rarity.... |

I've made one knife using Giraffe bone. It is awesome to work with. It grinds real nice, is very dense, takes a tremendous polish, and when dyed is just spectacular! Funds allowing, I would love to work with some more.
Here's the "pimp'ed" knife I used it on.. If you get the chance I highly recomend using it! Chris Nilluka |
