removing a hard spot - help

I have a block of damascus that is 1 1/4" cube. I am trying to drill a #7 hole 3/4 of the way through the centre of the block. About 1/2" in I hit a hard spot that I cannot drill through. Is there a way of softening the whole block. I have a kiln with fairly good temp control or a mapp torch.
Thanks for the help.
Steve

Try bringing the block up to about 1300? and soak until it's heated evenly then turn off the kiln and allow the steel to cool inside.

Make sure you go back at it with a sharp bit after softening as Doug suggested.
