Spring Temper

I'm Making A Lockback Using Ats 34. I Tempered The
Spring At 1160 F. And It Broke When I Sprung It To
The Depth Of The Cut In The Back. This Was After I Had Tried It Several Times. Should It Have Been Tempered Higher?

How many times did you temper it?. I temper mine at 1150 for 1hr then subzero it
for min of 8hrs then temper it once more, (2 total, sometimes 3) I do all my Lockbacks, slipjoints this way and have nerver had one to break. If you only tempered it once that is most likely what cause it to break. if you did 2 or more tempers and it still broke it was most likely bad steel, or the spring leaf was still to thick.

Interesting! I also have told to temper at 1160 degrees, but for two hours and do it twice. ATS makes fine springs but a drop of oil can keep galling from happening. Never done the temper for one hour but if it works, I am for it.

Hitachi recommends tempering ATS34 twice, two hrs. each time. If your temp. is correct for the application, you won't go wrong that way.
