3-phase grinder and a static phase converter?

Im looking at a 2 horsepower grinder and its 3-phase 380volt could I use a static phase converter or do I need a rotary converter? If I can use a static would a 230volt run it but just at a lower horsepower? Thanks guys im no electrician.

I'm no electrician either but I think a static would work except for the fact that it's a 380v motor. It might still work but you probably wouldn't get much hp out of it. A 3 phase 220v motor is more in line with what we normally get on our grinders so, if you could change out the motor, things would probably look better.

All that aside, what type of grinder is that. If it isn't something with a 2" wide belt, preferably 72" long and with both a platen and a good rubber coated contact wheel then I'd pass on it. Used industrial equipment can be more trouble than it's worth when trying to squeeze it into our small shops (and I'm talking dollar wise as much as physical size). Usually cheap to buy but pricey to convert and even then they use the wrong sized tools or belts so you can't get the ones you need or they don't support options you need like a small wheel attachment.

Just be sure you know what you're getting ...

It is made by an italian company and I asked the guy who has it for sale what size belt ut uses he said it had a 2x79 on it but would adjust down to 2x72 and it has a platen on it and 8" contact wheel. Looks to me like a 2 speed beefed up grizzly.
Thanks for the reply as always ray.

Well then, if it's built like a Grizzly AND if it costs less than a Grizzly AND if you can find a converter to run it without getting the price within, say, 60 or 70% of a Grizzly then I'd say go for it. In other words, not more than $400 in it including the cost of the cost of the converter. Otherwise, just buy the Grizzly for $600 and skip a lot of headaches...
