What do you prefer
I'm new here so i don't know if this has been discussed, sorry if it has. I was wondering what people prefer for every day carry, do you prefer fixed or folder, plain or partial serration? I prefer fixed with a plain blade, but it is somewhat harder to explain a fixed 4 to 6" blade as "just a tool". And, what do you prefer for hunting and self defense? How long for everyday, hunting or defense?

Two blades for two tasks
I carry both: A Spyderco Calypso fully serrated blade (3 3/4"?) which rips through cardboard and other material like a chainsaw. It's a slim folder with a clip in my front pocket.
And a small utility fixed blade with belt sheath by either Ron Clark or Gary Drew. Both have a small 3" blade and straight edge. I live in the sheeple capital of the world (Norwalk CT) and I have no reservations with it dangling on my side. It IS a tool! I carry others too, but these seem to do the majority of the work. I don't consider them for defence, but there is a secure feeling knowing they are there. Sheeple capital or not, I work close to some seedy areas of town. I don't hunt. Not my gig. Welcome! Working that kind of area I would feel better if I carried a few different knives, even if I didn't consider them for defense. Thanks for the post. Stay safe.

If I might add a word of caution,,,,None of us ever carry a knife for self defence,,,because if the law ever heard those words the knife is a wepon and not a tool and your intent for carring it is now clouded in intent to do harm.

i prefer folder and plain blade, folder because it tucks neatly in the pocket and no one knows its there if you dont tell them and straight blade just becausei like it.
i usually carry a small SAK with a can opener blade and bottle opener, its dam handy to be able to pry stuff and not risk the blade. now i just gotta work on making a custom rip off. brett __________________ Brett Holmes. Australian knife maker extraordinaire |

I agree skip, I just know that some people, such as military and law carry knives for back up and those were the ones I was refering that question to. I never carry a knife as a weapon either. But, what your saying does make sense.
