? glass:

hi, what is "pio glass" or "pryo glass"? i take it is some kind of heat resistance glass, but not sure. i want put a piece on the platen of my 4 x 36 delta grinder. that will give me an edge to "hang" the blade on when flat grinding. i need a piece 4in. wide by 10in.,and maybe 1/4in thick. i plan on cementing it on with lidqid nails or PL2000 construction adhevise.would this work? is there anyplace i could mail order a piece.? my local hardware guy had no idea of what i was talking about. i live in the boonies of northern wisconsin, so getting anything but basic sandpaper is a chore. thanks, jeri

I have been using a 1/4" thick piece of tempered glass (the kind used for glass shelving) on my 4x36 for 6mos and it works great. The sides are rounded to a 1/8" radius and the ends are about 3/16".
A local glass shop was the source.

Pyroceram is the material you see used in fire place doors, very strong and heat resistant. Also, very expensive especially in large pieces like you need. The least expensive source I know of is Steve Pryor. You can find Steve on the forums here as SPryor, I believe.

I use pyroceram - which is actually a translucent ceramic, not really glass - on both of my grinders. A few years back I narrowly avoided serious injury when one of the glass platens slipped off the steel platen and wrapped around the drive wheel which shattered it. That glass was secured only with an adhesive and had been in use for a couple of months with no problem until then. DO NOT SECURE A GLASS PLATEN WITH DOUBLE SIDED TAPE OR AN ADHESIVE ONLY! A very simple fix for this very bad problem is to secure a small piece of metal to the steel platen so that the glass platen rests against this 'foot'. THEN use the adhesive .........
