Pictures from Don Fogg's forging and finishing demos, Ashokan 2006
Don Fogg gave two excellent demonstrations at Ashokan this year. The first was a forging demo, during which he forged a knife from round bar. In the evening Don gave a demonstration on his technique for hand finishing a blade. Below are some photos from those demos.
FORGING DEMO
Don making a point. Forging the round bar. Forging with a manly hammer. Working on the point. ************************************************** ***** HAND FINISHING DEMO Don?s vise and backer for hand sanding. Steel bars used to hold self-adhesive sand paper. EDM stones soaking in windex, the blade, and other supplies. Beginning to sand. Working up a sweat, close-up of sanding technique. Crappy picture of the partially finished, etched, demo blade. (Sorry about the poor photo.) __________________ Christopher Meyer, Shenipsit Forge |

Wonderful images, Chris. I had a full 2-day work committment that weekend, and I was disappointed that it happened this way. Ashokan is only about 2 hours away.
Thanks! Coop |

Thanks Chris! Did you happen to write down the sanding sequence he was demonstrating? Did he ever use files? It is neat the way he uses a large bar to stick the sandpaper onto. I wonder if he indicated the source of his paper, grits, etc?
If not, the photos are really nice! |

Yes, Don did give the grit sequence, source for papers, etc. He does not keep anything secret. Unfortunately, I did not write the information down. Perhaps someone else did?
