Curly maple not showing grain on sides?

Hello everyone, newbie here,

A buddy gave me a Helle Nying blade a while back and told me to make my own handle, and I finally got around to tackling it. After much reading and planning this is what I ended up with. Curly maple, cowhorn, brass and leather spacers. Finished with the "Majestic Maple" kit.

I know there's a ton of room for improvement all around, but my main question has to do with the curly maple. That "blotch" in the middle of the handle, specifically. Did I stop sanding too soon? The other side has a much larger version, not as obvious but the upshot is that both seem to be obscuring the stripes. Anyway, I'm trying to understand what's going on here (guessing that it's the edges/sections of a growth ring) and if I could have avoided it (or if I can still fix it now that I've stained and oiled).

Thanks!

Is this wood that you harvested yourself (as opposed to buying from a knife supply place)? I don't know with certainty what that splotch is but my guess would be that some of the inner skin that lays under the bark hasn't been removed. If so, more sanding would get it done....
