Interesting. But, the knife is not 1964, it is post early-1966. Furthermore, though the 5th group did send teams into Vietnam early 1961-65, total of about 900 troopers on TDY during those years, the 5th group itself was not moved to Vietnam until early 1965. At that time I think the teams from the 7th and 1st on TDY in Vietnam all changed groups and were thereafter assigned to the 5th.

Now this guy could have been in the 5th group in 1964, and have been temporarily assigned to Vietnam before the group was moved from Ft. Bragg. It will not be hard to check the soldier's name and record, but that doesn't say much about the knife.

I would be concerned about the age of the knife, particularly the blade stamp. No way that is "early 1960s" or even 1964. I guess he could have been TDY from the 5th or 1st or 7th in 1964, became 5th group in 1965, ordered the knife and got it in 1966 before returning home ETS. Yep, the disconnects COULD all connect, but there are enough of disconnects to discount the knife ... my two cents.

I can't stand these guys who claim SF with suspect artifacts. I would like to... never mind...

I knew this would ruffle your feathers a bit, as it does mine.

The title "Viet Nam" let alone "SF" are thrown around WAAAAY too much by unscrupulous sellers....

Without any documentation whatsoever, it's just "Cool Story Bro"!

Bill,

From my perspective, the thong hole diameter is a little too large which may be a tell that the liner was drilled out.

Jack: Can you comment re the stamp and associated timeframe?

Here's another that just popped up. Not a SF claim, but an 80's knife being touted as VN era. The spacer set alone is enough to call foul.

Thanks,

Ron

Jack, I'm trying to avoid starting a new thread for a single question. What do you think about a date on this stamp? Disregard the sheath in the pics because it may or may not be the correct one for this knife. I bought another collection of mixed up knives.....

Bill, that looks like a type 1 stamp, pre 1966, possibly used back into 1950s. This style is pretty prototypical of the first Randall stamps on the key issues, though there are font differences that could probably be identified and further subdivided. There may be some variations I would like to attempt to categorize in a few months when I retire and have time.

The key clues are the "F" post is lined up with the right "M" post, the last "O" of Orlando is lined up in space between Randall and Made.

Caveat... I have not examined the stamps that may have been used after about 1975. It is possible that a later stamp was similar to this one. Also, I do not recognize the spacers on this knife. But you asked me about the stamp...

Here again are some simple guidelines. I documented this in a previous post that included knives the bracketed the key date... very early 1966. Identifying that change over date was my objective because it was smack dab in the middle of my time of interest, the Vietnam era.

Thanks Jack, I took it as a type 1, but the spacer type was throwing me a curve ball. I have an impression that it is a Denmark Sporting Goods knife because of them. These old knives really make ya think! lol

Bill & Jack
I don't believe it's a Denmark special as the grind line on those are diagonal

I believe yours to be a mod 7-5 fisherman. The sheath would be correct too with the horizontal keeper.
It looks close to a 3-5 Hunter too, but if the sheath is correct to the knife, the keeper would be diagonal, as the keeper on the 3-5 changed late 50's early 60's I think with the brown button.
* I found a pic of the back of the sheath, it's a 7-4 fisherman

It may be your photo Bill, but the grind forward of the stamp looks altered.

As to the stamp, it appears to be a type 1 as Jack says. I thought the small knives have a small stamp?

Thanks, Sam

Thanks Sam,

It is a Model 7-4.5" and it's in pristine condition. It's not a "Demark Special" but Denmark Sporting Goods sold all models of Randall Made Knives for decades. The red and white spacers were available on any of their knives if chosen.

Thanks for the clarification Bill. Any idea how long they have been offering those spacers?

Denmark's

Denmark's Sporting Goods, located at 149 North Magnolia Avenue (formerly Main Street) in Downtown Orlando, Florida. Denmark's was founded in 1941 by Tom Denmark and quickly became one of Central Florida's largest sporting goods suppliers. The store sponsored the television show Hunting and Fishing with Don, hosted by Don McAllister, which aired from 1954 to 1972. In 1985, Denmark sold his company to lawyer Donald Wright, who later changed the name of the store to Florida Sports. By 1988, the company had closed for business.

Walter Hudson Of Denmark's Sporting Goods

September 17, 1995

Walter Lee Hudson Jr., whose downtown Orlando sporting goods store was a gathering place for anglers and hunters for decades, died Friday of cancer. He was 82.
Hudson, who lived in Central Florida for more than 70 years, helped start Denmark's Sporting Goods at 149 N. Magnolia Ave. in the 1940s with Tom Denmark. The business became Central Florida's largest supplier of sporting goods, but went out of business in 1988.
