Steel Supply???
hey guys looking for a steel supplier.
i need steel that is at least 1/4" x 3" x ?? i am making a Nesmuk or Parang type knife and need the metal to be 3" wide to make it work. i would like the steel to be 1095, but i am not attached to it in anyway. i would like it to be high carbn steel though. i have tried Admiral, jantz, and USA Knifemaker. do you have any other suppliers that i dont know about? here is what i wanna make...... |

If the normal knifemaking suppliers don't have steel that wide, try McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com - they have 5160 and O1 in 1/4 x 3. I've bought O1 from them several times and had good luck with it. Another big plus is the their shipments usually arrive overnight or the next day.

as far as "The Steel Baron" he has a good selection.
he has 1095 in 3" width. 2ft for $24! its "1095 Hot rolled, oversized .02, pickled, annealed, and oiled" i have no idea what all that means. can anyone give me a translation! i understand annealed.. but pickled? and why is it oversized? thanks! |

1095 steel that was rolled hot to thickness, sheared, pickling is usually a solvent bath for cleaning purposes, annealed is made dead soft, and oiled is a light coating for rust prevention. .02 oversized means extra meat for clean up, 20/1000's of an inch.
(or .010 per side for clean up) It'l work God bless, Geno |

My local supplier referred me to Fry Steel out of LA. (www.frysteel.com) They ship anywhere. I don't know if you can buy less than 12 feet at a time, but they cut it for shipping into four-foot lengths. I get my 440C from them at about $7 per pound. Haven't tried to get any 10xx type. I bought some 1/4 x 3 in 5160 from Metal Supermarkets a while ago, but that proved a bit expensive. Good thing about these guys is one, you can buy as little or as much as you need, and two, they can source just about any steel - or metal, for that matter - you could think of.

I just took a look at Admirals steel list, and it looks like they DO have 1/4" x 3" 1095, but it's HR.
I don't know if that matters to you or not. __________________ -Andrew Riley For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.... (Hebrews 4:12) My YouTube Channel: www.YouTube.com/ARCustomKnives Check it out and Subscribe! |

PLEASE NOTE: Items available for sale in our on-line store represent only a very small portion of the items that we carry at Admiral Steel. We offer many different grades of steel & can custom cut to any size. Please call, fax, or e-mail us for pricing on items not listed in the On-Line Store.
I found this list on a their site as well, which is a little more extensive yet (and still not all they have): http://www.admiralsteel.com/pdf/bladesteel.pdf Also, I believe the $67.81 you saw is for quantity pricing, per piece of 6 or more. The price for a 1 to 5 pieces of HR 1095 (1/4" x 3") will be $55.48 for about 6 feet, which is probalby going to be the cheapest you'll find it, especially considering you should be able to pick it up yourself (free shipping). I believe they will also cut you shorter lengths if necessary. As soon as I get through my current stock, I'll probably take a drive over there myself. I actually passed through Alsip on the way back from the airport the other day. I was tempted to try and find the place... __________________ -Andrew Riley For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword.... i decided to get the steel from Aldo the New Jersey Steel Baron i ordered 1/4x3x24" 1095 http://njsteelbaron.com/shop
he has great prices and selection. i have also decided to order some 3/8x1.5x5" Hunter Orange Micarta from USA Knifemaker.com http://www.usaknifemaker.com/ for handle material a fellow knifemaker on FB told me about a guy who does some powdercoating of knife blades. he uses CeraKote to coat the blades, and they look really cool. he charges $20 a blade, and gives discounts on larger orders. he does a camo pattern that i want to get for the blade on my Parang knife. here is my rendition of what it might look like when finished..... what do you guys think??? |

Hunter orange where the knife will be seen while in it's sheath and camo where it will be hidden. I honestly don't see the point. Of course I personally don't like the idea of camo on a knife when something that small won't attract much attention. To me it's more camo overkill, like camo boxer shorts. Just my personal take.
