Dive/spearfishing knife-
what do you think would be the best steel for a spearfishing knife.
Im after something that is strong enough to open an oyster or pry off and abalone but will still stay sharp. Doesnt have to be razor sharp (would be a bonus) but must hold its edge. Is there anything I can do to stop/inhibit the rusting? Im thinking 420, 440 or rwl 34. thanks |

Two very different knife styles there.
the oyster/ abalone prying knife would probably be a traditional style dive knife. Stout, not too sharp and round/flat point. Most dive knives will do for the prying part, but the blade would be too think for oyster shucking. I do not dive for oysters or abalone, but I am a spearfishing junkie. A spearfishing knife is a killing knife with a blade made for stabbing. slender and pointy, think boot knife type point. made to penetrate the skull and stop the flailing of a speared fish. 440 is pretty common stain less steel for dive knives. Best rust protection is a fresh water rinse once finished for the day, and a wipe down. Knives left in salt water soaked gear bags for extended time periods will suffer. |

I dont know the best steel but will suggest you American Angler Electric Fillet Knife for fishing as it is very much popular And also provides replacement blades.

what is a good handle material for dive knifes? Does wood not work well since it'll be immersed in salt water?
