Talking Sometimes you need to get back to basics ...

I was thinking that newbies might get a kick out of this. I made this entirely by hand, cut with files and finished with sandpaper, HT in my own forge and oven. The only thing I used that was powered was my near-death $50USD drill press. Even the screw holes were countersunk holding the countersink bit in my hand. It can be done !! Thanks for looking. Cheers. Jason.

Nice work Jason! I think everybody should start out using just hand tools and improvising their own heat treating. It helps you understand what processes need to be done and how to do them. That, in turn, helps you decide what machines to buy to do those processes more easily.

And, when something finally does come up - as it surely will - that you simply cannot do on a machine you already have the confidence and skill to know you can find a way to do it....

Jason,

Just posted my first two knives on the display case, for the most part they were done the same way. The power tools I used was a drill press for the holes, and I had a 4x36 belt sander by the time I got to the scales. I am currently buying a 2x72 grinder and a few other toys.

You learn a lot profiling and filing a blade with a file.
