Lloyd Hale mini Bowie

A year or so before my father passed he gave me my finest Xmas present. He was a friend of Mr. Hale and talked him into making me a knife. I think he told me that he only charged him $100 for it. The knife is 11 inches from end to end with a wood handle and has a great leather sheath also made by Mr Hale. This knife was made during the time that all of his knives went to one person. On the blade is engraved "Expressly for 'my name'". I am not a collector but would like to get a value for insurance purposes. This knife has great detail but is not fancy. It was my intention to put this knife on my saddle when we ride horses but it is simply to nice to lose while out riding horses so I have kept it up from day one. Anybody with any knowledge of Mr Hale and the values of his knives I would like your guess as to it's value.

Lloyd is alive and well. His knives are nicely collectible, and he has been making then for other collectors for about ten years now.

He is NOT known for his wood handled knives, and thusly I would submit it's not that collectible or valued too highly. Having a specific name etched on the blade further devalues a piece, in regards to collectibility values.

That said, one can NEVER place a price on the value of a gift and what it means from family. A gift from your Dad before he passed? Absolutely priceless.

You said it: He charged your dad $100. From your description I would guess it's not worth more than, maybe, about $300. I hope I am wrong. (You'd have to actually sell it at auction to determine this price point, but that wouldn't be an option.

Insure it for a suitable amount and hope you NEVER have to make a claim. It's worth too much in history to YOU.

Personally for me things that were given to me by family members or were passed down a few generations mean more than the actual value but I understand why you are inquiring about the value. Sorry I can not be of assistance hope you can get it determined.
