Don Halter - Knife and Gonne contest

When I set out to do this one, I had "Beginnings" on my mind. The knife is a modern take on a 8th-10th century seax. The blade is san-mai style with some 1800's wrought iron around good ol' 1084 for a nice surface pattern with plenty of "sharp". The handle is some deer leg that was aged using iron oxide, a bucket, and a few months sitting around. Fittings are hammer textured brass and wrought iron.

The gun part of this shot is another one of my hobbies. It's a 1.1" bore black-powder handgonne based on some 15th century designs. The banding is wrought iron while the main tube is DOM seamless tubing. Weighing in at around 22 lbs, it doesn't kick much, but is fired best using the "fence hook" that mounts on the bottom.

I think of weapons like these when I ponder the beginnings of modern steel armaments.

Chris,

Your sure looking to stir up a pile of Stuff (I censored myself). I mean aint you the pot calling the kettle black with that webpage update? Ok you finally got to part of it....still waiting on your WIP page.

Once again Don, beautiful set up but I would like to see more than the business end of the Gonne, for a change...

Yeah, I was just thinking "That's a really cool seax and a good picture - especially for a guy who doesn't return email or update his website more than once a decade!"

I couldn't resist - especially with a bad influence like Chris around!

That is a terrific looking knife!

There were technically superior photos in the contest. But this one made me smile.

Got my vote!

Thanks guys! My whole site is in need of updating and "professionalizing". I'm really procrastinating the task, too!

Coop,
Thanks! I really liked my theme, I was just having a really hard time with the technical aspect trying to get the image I envisioned. Although frustrating, it was fun!

I have the kids here at my parent's house for the weekend. My dad used to do professional portrait photography (teaching at the local college as well) and still does astrophotography. I showed him this site and thread and just inheirited quite a bit of studio equipment...as well as a pretty good first lesson after he looked over my pic. I should have showed him this way back! I'm lookng forward to future contests!
